Weinkeller Erbach Flonheimer Adelberg Silvaner 2010

Name: Weinkeller Erbach Flonheimer Adelberg Silvaner
Variety: Silvaner
Region:  Rheinhessen
Country:  Germany
Year: 2010
Price: $18 regular; I got it for $4.95 (Vintage Cellar)

Winery review:  “The fruity, mouthwatering wine has a nice acidity-sugar balance and comes from the so called 'Rheinhessen-Switzerland', the heartland of Rheinhessen. It has a floral bouquet and is full of lemon zest, hint of passion fruit, and smells like yellow fruit, lemon-grass and green tea, all wrapped around a pleasant creaminess and a semi-dry profile. The finish is zippy and refreshing. Perfect for party on the deck as it comes in a liter bottle!” (Winery)

My review: Thankfully, I was able to try this wine twice. At the Vintage Cellar tasting, this wine was putrid. The nose was of over-ripe fruit and smelled vaguely chemical. I’m not sure if this was a result of tasting two bold reds beforehand or if our bottle was off, but my tasting partners all agreed this one was bad. Still, it was a good price so I bought a bottle to take to a wine dinner that night, desperately hoping it would be better.

To my excitement, it was great the next time we tried it. Our new bottle was crisp, clean, and smelled of lemon grass. It was no longer rotten or chemical; instead, it was delicious. The wine is billed as creamy but I thought it wasn’t very viscous at all, just smooth. I have another bottle to break out on the next warm day with friends of this wine! I’m excited to have it again.

I tasted this on its own with no food.
